Madagascar’s Protected Area Network has been established to protect the island’s unique and threatened habitats, biodiversity, and ecosystems, including globally important forests. The landscapes within and around this network are also home to thousands of rural, largely nature-dependent communities that rely on these protected areas to provide essential benefits that underpin their wellbeing. Successful management of Madagascar’s protected areas is therefore inextricably linked to and contingent on delivering sustainable and equitable development for people in the surrounding landscape. While Madagascar’s biodiversity enriches the lives of all humanity, rural Malagasy must not be disadvantaged by its conservation.
Royal Botanic Gardens Kew is leading a consortium of conservation and development NGOs as part of a major £10m investment in Madagascar, through the Defra Biodiverse Landscapes Fund. Building on over 100 years of combined community-based conservation experience in Madagascar, and mobilising a predominately Malagasy team, we seek to deliver a data driven and evidence-based model for the sustainable management of Madagascar’s protected areas, that tackles poverty, biodiversity loss and climate change in unison.

We are seeking a highly motivated Project Conservation Data Officer to help us deliver on this significant project as part of maternity cover for the current officer. This is an exciting opportunity to play a central role in an on-going programme, encompassing seven conservation, humanitarian and sustainable development organisations working collaboratively across nine protected areas, encompassing all of Madagascar’s major biomes. Based at Kew gardens in London (hybrid), this role will work closely with RBG Kew management and research staff, a consulting MEL team, as well as a network of collaborating conservation and development organisations, including Madagascar Voakajy, Durrell Wildlife and Conservation Trust, Missouri Botanical Garden, The Peregrine Fund and CARE International.
The ideal candidate will be educated to at least an MSc level with proven experience and interest in coordinating, curating, sharing and analysing large datasets, particularly those across biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods and climate mitigation and adaptation activities, and implementing app-based data collection approaches through platforms such as Kobo Collect, ESRI Survey123 and MS Sharepoint. The candidate will have a strong interest in connecting dataset management with MEL approaches to evidence-based evaluation and learning as part of the project structure and collaborating with a diverse range of Madagascar and UK-based project staff and contributors and collaborating on research to improve the knowledge base underpinning sustainable management actions.

The salary for this position is £38,100 - £39,043 per annum (pro rata), depending on skills and experience [Band D]
